The NSW Government is investing in road safety in the Electorate of Cessnock, with $1,092,458 committed to delivering council nominated road safety projects in the community.
A cornerstone of the 2026 Road Safety Action Plan, the Towards Zero Safer Roads Program focuses on sustainable, long-term reductions in road trauma by delivering safety upgrades in targeted, high-risk areas.
The program will fund vital road safety infrastructure in the Cessnock Local Government Area namely:
Wollombi Village – 40km/h high pedestrian activity area – Wollombi Road, Wollombi
The project will include safety improvements including the installation of signage, line marking, kerb blisters and shoulder widening. The installation of a 40km/h high pedestrian activity area is proposed to go where Wollombi Road, Paynes Crossing Road and Great North Road at Wollombi intersect.
This latest cash injection of more than $80 million is more than $10 million above the amount originally promised to local councils under the Towards Zero Safer Roads Program.
The funding will be provided over three years, from 2024/2025 to 2026/2027, for the delivery of more than 45 road safety projects and to progress the implementation of five 40 km/h High Pedestrian Activity Areas on roads maintained by local councils.
Details of each funded project is available www.transport.nsw.gov.au/system/files/media/documents/2024/crs_towards_zero_safer_roads_program_round2_rom_council.pdf
Minister for Regional Roads and Transport, Jenny Aitchison said:
“The NSW Government remains firmly committed to driving down deaths and serious injuries on NSW roads.
“I want to congratulate Cessnock City Council for their successful applications, with each nominated project assessed on road safety outcomes, risk and construction readiness.
“We’ve added more than $10 million to the $70 million already promised to councils to deliver the road infrastructure where it is most needed.
“Add these projects to the combined $241 million of road safety initiatives already announced under this round of Towards Zero Safer Roads Program funding for transport projects and we are heading in the right direction together as we continue to work toward lowering road trauma, with more than $321 million committed over the next three years.”
State Member for the Electorate of Cessnock, Clayton Barr said:
“This investment is a strong push in the right direction, ensuring the safety of drivers and pedestrians in Wollombi so that everyone can make it home safely to their loved ones.”
